Teaching with Primary Sources-MTSU

These workshops are a joint presentation of the Tennessee Historical Society and Teaching with Primary Sources – MTSU, which is administered by the Center for Historic Preservation. Participants are introduced to Tennessee History Day, a year-long, project-based curriculum that engages students in grades 6-12 in the process of discovery and interpretation of historical topics. Topics of discussion include: how do students benefit from History Day? what projects can they develop? how does History Day lead to increased learning? how can student performance be measured? what resources are available to teachers? Participants also are exposed to the Library of Congress’ Teaching with Primary Sources program, which helps teachers use the rich reservoir of digitized primary source materials to design challenging, high-quality instruction. Workshop participants will focus on skill building for project-based learning. All four workshop sessions begin at 10 AM CT / 11 AM ET via Zoom and will last 90 minutes.

Participating teachers receive a stipend and curriculum resources.

SESSION 1 AND 2

JULY 6 – 7, 2021

July 6 – “National History Day: Building a Project”

In this 90 minute session, participants will be introduced to Tennessee History Day, a year-long curriculum enhancement program that engages learners in grades 6-12 in the process of discovery and interpretation of historical topics. Topics covered will include: an introduction to the History Day framework, the benefits of participating in History Day, potential project options, measurements of participant success, Tennessee standards and social studies practices that can be met by utilizing History Day, as well as resources that are available to educators.

July 7 – “Reading the Rubrics: Increasing Student Growth by Self-Assessment”

In this 90 minute session, participants will spend time analyzing the National History Day rubrics that were introduced in the 2020-2021 contest season. Comments from participating educators and students will be discussed. Ideas for rubric use will be shared, including ways educators can use them for student self-assessment, tracking growth through the contest cycle, creating a historical vocabulary, and practicing giving and receiving feedback. Then, participants will have an opportunity to see these rubrics in action by applying one to a Tennessee History Day project. Discussion to follow.

July 13 – “Helping Students Evaluate Sources”

In this 90-minute session, Teaching with Primary Sources-MTSU will explore strategies for helping students improve their analytical skills with primary sources. Activities will focus on better identifying perspective and understanding significance of specific primary sources when selecting sources to use in your research. The session will also discuss how to assist students in better utilizing Library of Congress collections when searching for sources.

July 14 – “Strategies for Teaching Historical Argument and Student Voice”

In this 90-minute session, Teaching with Primary Sources-MTSU will dig into how to help students develop historical arguments supported by analysis. We will discuss how to build in historical context into historical argument and use evidence from primary sources to draw conclusions.
